Product Introduction

Melatonin is a small, endogenous indole molecule secreted by the pineal gland. It is a frequently used research tool in temporal biology, oxidative stress, immune regulation, and apoptosis mechanisms. Compared to ordinary peptides, it is a small, lipid-soluble monomer with stronger penetrability and greater system stability, making it suitable for basic experiments in almost all cell and animal models. Many laboratories regularly use this ingredient for experiments on circadian rhythm disruption, oxidative damage protection, inflammation suppression, and cell pretreatment. It offers high cost-effectiveness and good experimental reproducibility, making it a staple basic research reagent for research groups. This product is for laboratory in vitro research use only and is strictly prohibited for human use, clinical applications, and cosmetic procedures.

II. Core Mechanism of Action
The core advantage of melatonin is its lipid-soluble, transmembrane-penetrating properties, allowing it to rapidly enter the cytoplasm, mitochondria, and even the nucleus without barrier limitations. This is a key structural feature that distinguishes it from most water-soluble regulatory substances.

First, it possesses a powerful endogenous antioxidant mechanism, directly scavenging intracellular free radicals, reducing ROS accumulation, alleviating mitochondrial oxidative stress damage, stabilizing cell membrane lipid structure, and reducing oxidation-induced apoptosis and senescence. Unlike single antioxidants, it can simultaneously activate multiple intracellular antioxidant enzyme pathways, forming a sustained antioxidant protection system.

Second, by binding to the cell membrane MT1/MT2 receptors, it precisely regulates circadian rhythm-related signaling pathways, influencing cell cycle rhythms, metabolic rhythms, and hormone secretion rhythms, making it a core tool molecule for studying the biological clock mechanism.

Simultaneously, melatonin exhibits significant inflammatory regulatory properties, inhibiting the overactivation of classic inflammatory pathways such as NF-κB, reducing the release of inflammatory factors, and alleviating the inflammatory microenvironment at the cellular and tissue levels. It has wide applications in damage repair, inflammation models, and immunomodulation experiments.

III. Applicable Research Scenarios
Based on the needs of universities and R&D teams we regularly work with, Melatonin primarily focuses on the following research areas:

- Circadian rhythms, circadian clock gene regulation, and mechanisms related to sleep-wake cycles

- Cellular oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, ROS clearance and protection experiments

- Inflammation model construction, inflammatory pathway inhibition, and immune microenvironment regulation research

- Positive and negative control experiments on apoptosis, autophagy, and aging mechanisms

- Fundamental research on metabolic disorders and endocrine timing regulation

- Drug pretreatment protection and preliminary screening experiments on damage model repair mechanisms

Storage Conditions

Tablets/Capsules: Store in a cool, dry place at room temperature (15–25°C), protected from light and sealed. Do not place in the bathroom (moisture is a major enemy) or near a car window. Aluminum foil is more stable than bottles.

Liquid/Sublingual Drops: Refrigerate at 2–8°C after opening, protected from light, and use within 30–60 days, as melatonin is easily oxidized and degraded in aqueous solutions, especially in alkaline environments.

Powder (Research Grade): -20°C Store in a cool, dry place away from light, in a nitrogen-filled or desiccant-filled bag. Stable for 12–24 months. After reconstitution, dilute with sterile acidic water (pH 4–5), store at 2–8°C away from light, and use within 7 days. Do not freeze-reconstitute.

Color change is a visual indicator: white/pale yellow is normal; dark yellow/brown indicates oxidation and inactivation, discard immediately.

Precautions:

When dissolving melatonin, because its solubility in water is low, it is recommended to first dissolve it in a small amount of anhydrous ethanol, then dilute with buffer. Do not use a pipette tip to blow or aspirate vigorously, and do not use ultrasound to violently shake it, as this may damage its structure. Also, when conducting cell experiments, be sure to accurately determine its concentration gradient. Do not add too much at once to see the effect, as high concentrations may produce non-specific toxicity. Furthermore, pay attention to the dosing time in animal experiments. Melatonin has a very short half-life; incorrect dosing timing will significantly reduce its rhythm-regulating effect. Finally, remember to keep detailed experimental records. In case of abnormal data, you can go back and check whether there was a problem in the dissolution or storage process.
