MT2 is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide that mimics the body's natural α-MSH (alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone). Developed in the 1980s by the University of Arizona, its initial purpose was to study skin pigmentation and UV protection.
Its core selling points are twofold: it tans the skin without requiring excessive sun exposure; and an "accidental discovery"-enhanced libido. Therefore, it has been marketed online as a "tanning injection" or "love potion," but the FDA has never approved it for any medical use. Strictly speaking, it is currently only a research compound, not a drug.
Core Advantages and Functions
1. "Accelerator" of Melanin Production: MT2 binds to the MC1R receptor on skin melanocytes, stimulating melanin synthesis. Theoretically, a small amount of UV exposure combined with MT2 can achieve the skin tone that normally requires prolonged sun exposure. This mechanism has potential research value for patients with photosensitive skin diseases (such as erythropoietic protoporphyria)-but note, it's "research value," not "approved indication."
2. Unexpected Side Effect of Enhanced Libido
The α-MSH pathway is related to sexual behavior regulation. MT2, as an MC4R agonist, has shown effects in enhancing libido and improving erectile function in animal experiments and some human observations. This is why it is sought after by some, but again-it lacks formal clinical trial support and regulatory approval.
3. Long-lasting Effect
Once the target skin tone is achieved, melanin levels can be maintained for several months even after discontinuation of the drug. It fades much more slowly than natural tanning.
Storage Conditions
Lyophilized Powder: -20°C or lower, sealed and protected from light, preferably with a desiccant. Tryptophan residues are easily oxidized, and the lactam bond may hydrolyze under humid conditions.
After Reconstitution: Refrigerate at 4°C for 7-14 days; for long-term storage, aliquot into single-use doses at -20°C, avoiding repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
Protect from Light: Use brown bottles or light-proof bags. Light will degrade tryptophan and histidine residues.
Precautions
First and foremost, it must be emphasized that this is a research reagent for laboratory research use only and should absolutely not be used for clinical diagnosis or human treatment. Secondly, this stuff is most susceptible to damage from repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Once it freezes and then thaws, the protein is easily degraded and becomes ineffective, so it must be aliquoted in advance. Also, if you have lyophilized powder, it is recommended to briefly centrifuge it before opening the cap to shake off any powder that may be stuck to the tube wall or cap to the bottom. When reconstituted, be gentle and avoid vigorous vortexing.
